18th Century Philadelphia Chippendale Style Chairs
Featured in this lot are eight 18th century Philadelphia Chippendale style mahogany side/dining chairs. The chairs show elegant carved legs and carved slat backrests. The chair features front cabriole legs and claw and ball feet. The blue cloth seat shows a colorful floral design of pink, white, beige, tan, green and orange. This type of chair is not only very elegant and luxurious, but comfortable too. The carving and artistry of this chair is exquisite, and although the maker for these chairs is unclear, it is attributed to 18th century Benjamin Randolph. The popularity of the design has held for more than two hundred years. Philadelphia Chippendale is a style of 18th century furniture made in Philadelphia and characterized by rich ornamental carving. The chairs show good condition overall with most of the chairs showing fading and chipping to some wood components from their antique age and years of use, but no obvious signs of damage are noted. The captains chair measures 45 1/4" high by 26" wide and 24" deep with the remaining chairs measuring 22 1/2" wide.
