18th Century Infantry Hanger, 19th Century Austrian Officers Sword and Confederate Naval Cutlass
The lot consists of a Revolutionary War period infantry hanger, an early 19th century Austrian Infantry Officers sword and a Confederate Naval Cutlass. The infantry hanger has a 25-inch, slightly curved pipe-back blade and iron, three branch, guard with brass pommel and wooden grip. The sword is not marked and has no scabbard. The infantry officer's sword has a 29-inch pointed blade with stopped fuller. A marker's name and city is stamped on the obverse ricasso. The sword has a gold-plated, brass two-branch, pierced guard, down-turned quillion and turned wooden grip. The guard features the double-headed Austrian Eagle with pierced flora designs between the branches and cast floral designs on the backstrap and pommel. The scabbard has a steel body with gilded, sheet-brass throat and drag. The throat is embossed with a crown over a two-letter monogram. The Confederate Naval Cutlass is very similar to the cutlass illustrated and described on page 143 of "CONFEDERATE EDGED WEAPONS" by William Albaugh. The cutlass has an unmarked, 20-inch, pointed blade, sheet brass guard with downturned quillion and beaded edge and cast brass, fish scale grips. "CSN" is cast on the obverse side of the pommel and a fouled anchor is case on the reverse side. The brass grip has the reddish patina that is common on Confederate brass items. The cutlass is not marked and does not have a scabbard.
