For your bidding pleasure is an 18th century French marionette. In the 18th century, marionette (string puppet) troupes were world-famous and popular with adults and children alike. Troupes toured the country in the UK and abroad, setting up temporary theatres seating 200-700 people at fairs or on village greens, and playing in established music halls and theatres. They were run by families whose members carved, dressed, strung and operated the marionettes in short plays based on popular entertainment. This marionette is dressed in plate armor. The breastplate features a stylized fleur de lis. The fauld shows a nice patina and the tip of the sword is affixed to it. This marionette features a hand carved wooden head with long goatee. The marionette is on a wooden display. The pauldron style shoulder plates have two attachment points for strings. The fauld also shows two attachment points for strings as well. This marionette shows a wonderful patina and period correct armor and undergarments. the base measures 22" x 6".
