The side sword was introduced around the 15th Century and is also known as a spada da lato. This style was a forerunner and contemporary of the rapier. It's ability to engage unarmored targets with cutting blows and switch to pointwork for dealing with armor make it a very useful battlefield weapon. The blade is double edged and measures 36 3/4 inches long with a faint unidentified makers stamp on the right side. The guard is fitted with a 4 inch wide by 4 1/2 inch long border engraved protective disc. There is a short upturned rear quillon, two branch knuckleguard and a counterguard running along the back of the hand. The grip is wire wrapped with grooves front and rear, woven wire accents, a thumbrest and an oval pommel.
