This George III sterling silver Salt Cellar, hallmarked London, is a classic example of the silver from 1767, showing all the embellishments that would be expected from a piece of this kind. Its maker was Jacob Marsh. This piece is engraved with the initials ?I-M? (for the maker) on the underside of the bowl. It is also marked with a ?Lion Passant? which shows the Royal control over the Assay Office from which this was minted, the ?M? refers to the year in which it was made, and the ?Leopard crowned head? indicates the master goldsmith overseeing its making and preventing forgery. It measures 1? high and 2.25? in diameter and weighs 1 oz (28.63gram).
