18th Century Slave Ankle Shackle With Internal “Rattles”
Late 18th Century Colonial Era, Original Hand-Forged Iron Slave Ankle Shackle 5” x 4.5” with an inner diameter of 4” with Internal “Rattles” to made noise, Very Fine.
A VERY RARE form of Rattle Shackle, 100% working, all original and untouched, an utterly horrible, tangible testament to the malevolence of Slavery. Because this particular type of Rattle Shackle does not have iron loops or openings to “thread” iron chain through, it would have been attached to the ankle or wrist of a “House Slave” who worked strictly inside the plantation house and thus was under very close supervision by the plantation owner and/or family members. This very rarely found, 18th century, SLAVE Rattle Shackle was used by and likely came from a plantation in the Southern states. The sides of the Rattle Shackle are constructed of lateral “pockets” each containing one small, iron orb that would “Rattle” when the wearer would move about. Excellent for display having a natural even patina.
