Colonial Era Hand-Forged Set of Iron Slave Shackles
18th Century Colonial Era, Hand-Forged Set of Iron Slave Shackles with Chain, Fine.
This Hand-forged Set of Slave Trade Shackles, is a rarer type used in the 18th Century from about 1750 in the Colonial through Revolutionary War Era. It consists of two semicircular cuffs connected by several large links of chain to measure an overall length of 16.5 inches long. According to the consignor, these came from the Charleston, South Carolina area which was notorious for its Slave auctions and the Charleston Slave Hire Badges that were purchased by city mandate yearly to be worn by Slaves at work or hired out by their masters. The surfaces have a uniform natural crusty age tan patina. Judging by the size of the cuffs (inner diameter is 2.5”), these would only have been useful on a large slave with big wrists and hands. An impressive set of Hand-Forged Iron Slave Shackles worthy of any Black History related display.
