18th Century Hand Woven Japanese Silk Kesa. Kesa, was the traditional garment worn by monks and priests for centuries. During the Edo period (1601 - 1867) Yuuzen resist dye techniques were developed and complex patterns such as flower and bird motifs became popular. This Kesa was crafted with silk imported from China when trade was quite limited. Expert weavers meticulously interwove gold thread to create the flowing traditional flower and kiji (Japanese pheasant) patterns that adorn the Kesa. Colors, patterns and materials used were essential to identify the rank and importance of the wearer by others in society. This use of rare silk, and opulent patterns in gold thread (difficult for any skilled weaver to incorporate), strongly suggests that this Kesa was made for and worn by an extremely important well respected officer in the religious court and reflects the importance and value of this piece. The Plexiglas case weighs in excess of 250 pounds and would cost no less than $3,000-4,000 to be made today. For the sake of shipping we are not selling the case, however we will include it if the buyer is willing to pay the crate packing, shipping & insurance fees. CONDITION: slight 4 inch tear to the garment otherwise this piece is in excellent condition. APP SIZE: 48"/120cm Length x 81"/203cm Width
