18TH CENTURY SILVER HILTED LION HEAD CUTTOE OR

HUNTING SWORD. Overall length: 26 1/4". Blade length: 20 5/8". This blade was cut down from a longer Hussar blade likely important to the family of the owner. The blade has a single wide fuller with a single narrow fuller near the spine. The blade is engraved over 1/3 of its length with a rampant Hussar on each side & foliate motif. There is also a ribbon on each side that reads “VIVAT HUSSAR”, which translates to “THE HUSSAR LIVES”. Solid silver S-shaped guard with cut designs on each quillon. Chained guard terminates just below the very well articulated solid silver lion head pommel. Grip is diagonally reeded dark hardwood. Scabbard is silver mounted leather. CONDITION: blade shows a medium gray mottled patina. Hilt has a pleasing lightly tarnished finish and the grip is undamaged. Scabbard leather appears to be a skillful museum quality replacement utilizing the original solid silver mounts. (02-19591/BF). $1,200-1,600.
