18TH C ITALIAN / SARDINIAN FINELY-CRAFTED POIGNARD
Finely crafted 18th century poignard dagger. Style and shape are consistent with styles carried amongst aristocracy in the Mediterranean region of Sardinia and southern Italy. Central fullered spear point blade measures 11.5 inches, with balustered bolster, silver ferrule, horn grips with high relief silver insets, and silver pommel. 5.5 inch false edge on top of blade leads to flat edge engraved with what appears to be "non ti finor da me se il cor ti marchio no mi cuore", and "senza ragione" on lower shoulder. Blade is finely engraved in high relief with what appears as a gentleman bidding farewell to a woman on one side, and on horseback on the other, and the balance in floral scroll and animals. Scabbard is blue velvet over wood, with silver throat and chape. Some wear to velvet on scabbard, and a few dings to throat. Dagger itself in in excellent condition, presenting an exceptionally fine example of its kind. This lot has a reserve.
