Handpainted cup / can and saucer with lid. Often considered to have been used to drink chocolate. Made in Rouen, France during the 18th century.
Diameter of saucer is 6 1/2inches. Cup is 4 inches high, excluding the lid, and top diameter of cup is over 3 1/2inches.
All 3 pieces are profusely decorated in puce, blue, burnt-orange and green with a lot of gold as an integral part of the patterns and as highlights. Flowers or organic patterns within columns surround the perimeter of each piece. Within are sprigs of flowers of various sizes, gold scrolls and sunbursts. In front of the cup is a handpainted landscape scene with 18th century courtiers greeting each other, water, parks and mountains in the background. The handle is naturalistically modelled as a stem, ending in a 3-dimentional cluster of foliage and berries. Similar applied decoration on the lid. Richly gilded berries.
Marked underneath with a red fleur-de-lis over a P. Mark used in Rouen, 16th-18th century. The fleur-de-lis is usually associated with the Bourbon kings of France and the cup may have been commissioned for him.
There is also an impressed anchor.
Condition of all 3 pieces is excellent. No chips/cracks/damage to be found, although the cup does have light crazing.
