1899-S<$20> MS64 PCGS. In the October 1979 issue of the The Coin Dealer Newsletter Monthly Summary there was an analysis by Les Fox that examined Liberty double eagles and their investment potential. The S-mint twenties from the 1880s and 1890s were put in the "Recommended Sleepers" category with this comment: "These are the most overlooked (and underpriced) scarcer dates in the Type 3 series--possibly in all of U.S. Numismatics!" He likened these pieces to "gold silver dollars" and said one could collect them like other collectors did silver dollars. At $650-$850 per coin, they certainly proved to be a prudent investment, and apparently the consignor of all the high grade S-mints in this sale heard the call of these pieces in MS64 condition.
The 1899-S is one of the more available San Francisco twenties from this time period and it is occasionally found in MS64 (although rarely finer). This is a highly lustrous example that displays rich golden-orange and lilac color over each side. A tad softly struck on the peripheral stars, the centers are fully brought up. Lightly abraded on the obverse, as usual.
