1899-S<$10> MS69 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. Stunning. Awe-Inspiring. Breathtaking. These are only a few of the words that one could use to describe the beauty of this spectacular piece, perhaps the finest Liberty Eagle that we have ever had the pleasure to behold. Like most of the other S-mint coins obtained by Eliasberg from the John H. Clapp collection in 1942, this piece was purchased directly from the United States branch mint in San Francisco for face value at the time of issue. While not a proof, it is described by Bowers & Ruddy in their 1982 sale of the gold portion of Eliasberg's collection as a "specimen." While this term was obviously there used in a loose sense of the word, this coin is certainly a special piece that was set aside at the time of striking because of its nearly pristine attributes. Alas, it isn't perfect, as very close inspection indicates a couple of tiny abrasions that are seen only after close inspection, but we won't cast the first stone to fault this piece, as any collector of this denomination knows that bagmarks are the rule rather than the exception on this big, heavy gold coin (we have seen many Gem graded examples that, quite honestly, weren't all that pretty because of a number of noticeable abrasions). It is sharply struck, beautifully lustrous, and is as close to perfect as one could ever expect to find. One of the finest graded examples of the type in existence, and the finest certified for the date by NGC by a full four points. A stunning beauty that could be the ultimate type example for the Liberty Eagle series. Population: 1 in 69, 0 finer (4/04).

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
