1899 Assay Commission Medal. MS64 Brown Uncertified. Julian AC-43, R.5. Copper, 34.0 mm., 322.5 grains. The obverse is identical to the 1898 medal, and apparently from the same die. The reverse has a bust of Pallas above a shield, with an eagle below. Scales are superimposed on the shield, and the entire design is enclosed by a wreath, with the legend UNITED STATES MINT ANNUAL ASSAY 1899 above. According to official records, just 10 examples of this medal were struck in copper or bronze, with 40 pieces produced in silver. This relative rarity is supported by a review of auction offerings. This is a gorgeous example, perhaps deserving of the Gem grade designation, with glossy olive and reddish-brown surfaces. All design elements are boldly defined.
Ex: Saccone Sale (Bowers and Merena, 11/1989), lot 3490; G. Lee Kuntz Collection (Superior, 10/1991), lot 2257.
