1899 $5 Silver Certificate Indian Chief Banknote
United States silver certificate dated 1899, denomination of five dollars. The obverse of the note features a central portrait of Chief Running Antelope, a distinguished Hunkpapa Lakota tribal leader. To the left of the portrait is a large blue "V" overlaid with the word "FIVE," positioned above the note's blue printed serial number "55520630." At the right, another serial number appears above a blue U.S. Treasury seal. Additional inscriptions include the phrase "Silver Certificate" at both the top and bottom, with text indicating the note is "payable to the bearer on demand." The reverse is printed in green and features ornate engravings with symmetrical elements. At the center is a decorative large "V" surrounded by a multi-layered floral-like guilloche pattern. Above the central motif is the inscription "United States of America," flanked by the words "Silver Certificate" and two classical cornucopia designs. The denomination "FIVE DOLLARS" appears in banners below, with large numeral 5s positioned in all four corners. This note is a historic example of late 19th-century U.S. currency and one of the few series to feature a Native American figure as its primary portrait.
