<B>1899 $5 PR67<img src="/images/star.gif" width="10" height="10" alt="" border="0"> Ultra Cameo NGC.</B></I> Absolutely incredible light yellow and lemon-gold on each side with essentially perfect surfaces. Both sides have bold design definition with extraordinary devices and fully mirrored fields. The contrast between the fields and design motifs is impressive. In 1899 there were 99 proof half eagles coined in Philadelphia. Walter Breen estimated that about 80 examples of each gold denomination were sold in four-piece gold proof sets, leaving four double eagles, six eagles, 19 half eagles, and 70 quarter eagles available for individual sales.<BR> Our own study of proof gold coins suggests that about 20 to 25 examples still survive today, including many that are impaired or otherwise undesirable. The present piece is one of the finest examples that we know of, although NGC has actually certified four pieces in PR68 Ultra Cameo. We are unable to determine the pedigree of this Superb Gem, as careful study fails to reveal any convenient pedigree markers. One of the great numismatic conundrums is that lower grade pieces are easier to pedigree, but the higher grade pieces are those for which pedigrees are more highly desired.<BR> The present opportunity to purchase this piece, or any one of the other proof gold pieces in the current sale, should be considered by both the advanced specialist or the type collector.
