1899 $5 PR64 PCGS. While the production of business strike half eagles, both in Philadelphia and at the San Francisco facility, reached significant numbers as the 19th century drew to a close, its proof half eagle counterpart is seldom offered. Even the official mintage of just 99 pieces fails to convey the rarity of the issue. This specimen is almost certainly the same piece offered in our 1996 ANA Sale, a coin that was then uncertified, but now resides in a PCGS holder. The deep, glassy mirrors are tinged in reddish patina and display appreciable contrast between fields and devices. A cluster of tiny blemishes to the left of the date and beneath the eagle's beak will identify any future market appearances. Population: 15 in 64, 2 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
