<B>1899<$5> MS66 NGC.</B></I> Let the purists quibble over whether the 1899 issue is the last half eagle of the 19th century, or merely the last of the denomination with an 1800s date. But that adds to the attractiveness of the issue. The present piece, however, needs no boost, boasting as it does phenomenal, pristine surfaces that are remarkably free of abrasions, large or small. Add a nearly full strike and splendid luster, and this piece emerges in the top echelon of available survivors. Census: 52 in 66, 7 finer (9/06).
