<B>1899 $20 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS.</B></I> According to Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, fewer than 30 coins are known today of the 1899 proof double eagle, a popular entry in the series as the last issue dated in the 1800s. Of the Smithsonian's multiple examples of most issues in the Liberty Head double eagle series, only a single 1899 is found, grading PR63. The current population reports do show, counting the inevitable resubmissions, a total of 47 pieces in all proof grades, with the median grade about PR64. A perusal through our own auction archives shows that only once before, in the past 13 years, have we offered an example graded finer than the present piece, that by a single point and lacking the Deep Cameo designation from PCGS. We have offered four PR65 pieces in that same length of time, none of them certified Deep Cameo.<BR> The date on proofs of this issue is low in the field, closer to the denticles than to the truncation of the bust, and placed somewhat to the right. Deep sunset-orange coloration is the prime hallmark of this delectable Gem proof. A single straight, undistracting contact mark on Liberty's cheek appears to be the only negative, but there are loads of counteracting positives besides the pretty coloration. The desired black-on-gold contrast is noteworthy, with the pristine fields deeply mirrored and essentially pristine, showing a watery, glasslike clarity. The strike is bold and absolutely flawless. Despite extensive perusal with a loupe, the pristine surfaces yield few pedigree markers. The most promising is a minuscule dot in the planchet, invisible without a lens, between stars 3 and 4 and nearly in front of Liberty's nose. Accompanied by an old first-generation PCGS green-label tag showing the previous grade, PR65.
