The 150 proof Quarter Eagles issued at the dusk of the 19th century represent a standard mintage figure for the type. Not all of these specimens ended up with serious collectors, though. As a result, fewer than half of the original mintage figure is extant today in all grades. The bold Gem Proof specimen offered here is one of the very few deep cameo Proofs that are known from this year that, because it resides in a relatively early PCGS holder, the holder fails to note it as such. In those days, the Mint continued its emphasis on the high contrast method of Proofing. We can only conclude this must be one of the first pieces struck from the {roof dies, since it is so fresh appearing. The surfaces are brightly mirrored and essentially as made.
