<B>1899 $2 1/2 MS65 NGC.</B></I> Quarter eagle mintages from late in the Liberty Head series are surprisingly low, a fact sometimes forgotten in the face of the relative abundance of half eagles from the same timeframe. In the case of the 1899 quarter eagle, for example, no more than 27,200 business strikes plus 150 proofs were produced, and yet it trades like an ordinary type coin. This Gem example offers exuberant luster over sharply struck antique-gold surfaces. A thin circular scrape, visible only at a certain angle, likely limits a potentially finer grade.
