1899 $1 Silver Certificate Eagle Banknote PMG Graded Choice Very Fine 35
This is a 1899 Series $1 Silver Certificate, commonly referred to by collectors as the "Black Eagle" note. It has been professionally graded by PMG (Paper Money Guaranty) as Choice Very Fine 35, signifying light circulation with moderate handling that preserves considerable detail in both the design and print. The obverse of the note features a dramatic engraving of a bald eagle with outstretched wings, perched atop an American flag. Behind the eagle is the dome of the U.S. Capitol building, symbolizing national pride and government authority. Below the central vignette are finely engraved portraits of two prominent American Presidents: Abraham Lincoln on the left and Ulysses S. Grant on the right. Above the eagle, the inscription reads "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" with the denomination "ONE SILVER DOLLAR" below. The reverse of the note exhibits intricate green ornamental engravings surrounding the central text and the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "SILVER CERTIFICATE" prominently at the bottom. The elaborate guilloche design and geometric borders display the artistic and security-focused engraving techniques of the period. The note carries the serial number X72505926X, printed in dark blue ink and appearing twice on the front. Signatures of Houston B. Teehee as Register of the Treasury and John Burke as Treasurer of the United States are visible at the lower portion of the note. Encased and certified by PMG, the note is secured in a tamper-evident holder. PMG protective sheet measures: 8.25"L x 5"H.
