1898$1> PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. The repeal of the Sherman Act in 1893 resulted in the closing of the mints to the free coinage of silver. This was a hard blow to the cause of bimetallism, in that it restricted the use of silver. It was followed by a lower price for that metal than had ever been known. However, agitation for bimetallism increased in America and took the form of advocating the free coinage of silver by the United States and was the principal issue in the presidential elections of 1896 and 1900. In both cases it was emphatically rejected.
While Americans were hashing out the issue of the free coinage of silver between 1896 and 1900, some of the most attractive silver proof coins ever produced were struck by the Mint. This is especially true of those from 1898, coins that are invariably deeply reflective and often show heavy frost over the devices. This is a lovely example of that production process. What is even more exceptional on this piece is the remarkable preservation of this coin's surfaces. They are virtually free of contact marks or any other form of post-striking defects. Brilliant throughout with immense eye appeal. Census: 15 in 67, 2 finer (9/06).
