1898 S$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. Three obverse dies and two reverse dies were employed to strike 735 proofs dated 1898. Of that minuscule mintage the majority of the survivors are not cameo in appearance, and even more are impaired due to mishandling. Supporting evidence of this claim can be found through a quick review of the NGC Census Report, the PCGS Population Report, and auction archives. As of (4/07), NGC has certified only 19 examples in PR66 Cameo and Ultra Cameo combined, with 24 examples graded higher, although possible inflation of these figures must be taken into consideration due to multiple resubmissions of the same coin. David Bowers in his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States (Third Edition, 2006) estimates a total population of only 136 PR65 or better 1898 Morgan dollars, with a cameo effect or otherwise. This is a splendid two-toned proof dollar. Both sides are brilliant, the strike is strong throughout, and we see no mentionable marks. We should mention that there is a deep, vertical scratch in the holder. This may show on the photo, but it is not on the coin. Census: 9 in 66, 7 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
