1898 S$1 MS67 PCGS. The 1898 is a relatively common, late date P-mint dollar in most Mint State grades up to and including MS66 condition. However, since it is unlikely that any of the 1898 dollars that were in the Redfield Hoard (a possible 16-18 bags) would qualify today as MS67, collectors who seek a high grade example such as this one are usually left waiting until a major collection is dispersed. Such pieces are usually from holdings distributed by the Treasury Department in the 1950s and 1960s. Usually, these coins do not qualify either as Superb by today's standards, but once in a while such a coin does appear in the marketplace. This is an exceptionally pleasing coin that displays the silky, satin-like mint luster common to 1898 dollars. Brilliant throughout, the surfaces are devoid of any meaningful abrasions, and the striking details are fully defined on each side.
