1898<S$1> MS67 PCGS. An extremely common date within the Morgan Dollar series, except in Superb Gem condition. In fact, this example is tied with just 14 other submissions for honors as the finest certified example of the date. If resubmissions of the same coin are taken into consideration, the number of different Superb Gem MS67 examples certified by PCGS is almost certainly less than 10 coins. Prior to hoards of these coins being released from the Treasury during the 1950s and 1960s, this was actually considered to be a scarce date. Most older collections, formed before that time, contained Proof examples. Richly frosted with radiant cartwheel luster, the surfaces are silent on the subject of distracting abrasions. Liberty's cheek is particularly smooth, and the striking definition is needle sharp throughout. The otherwise untoned features reveal delicate golden-orange tinting at the denticles along the right obverse periphery.
