1898-O<25C> MS64 PCGS. An interesting coin with a lightly toned obverse in pastel yellow and blue hues, while the reverse is largely untoned, save for a smidgen of gold at the rim. Both sides show prominent clash marks, infrequently seen on Barber coinage. While not as prominent, there is also evidence of die cracking on both sides: on the obverse, a couple of light cracks traverse the bust truncation to star 13, while the reverse has numerous cracks through the denomination, the eagle's tail and claws, the stars (one proceeding from a clash mark), and STATES OF. It appears that the New Orleans Mint was trying to maximize die life for the eventual coinage of nearly 1.9 million pieces. While this coin is interesting from a technical perspective, it is also quite eye-appealing, and is considered a better date among Barber quarter aficionados.
