1898 Indian Head 1C PCGS MS65 R
1898 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS65 R. Satiny matte surfaces explode with intense luster and varying shades of copper to golden red. It is easy to see this piece was delivered a hard blow by the dies, or as some researchers believe, the dies were still very new and carefully set in the equipment to impart the requisite force, and which imparted their sharpness to the struck planchet, including the feather shafts, vanes, and barbs.

At this period in our history, the Mint bought the copper blanks that were used to strike Indian cents, rather than manufacture the blanks in-house. A pound of copper, enough to make 108 cents, cost 11 cents in 1898. And unlike today where cents are dumped into a jar and forgotten, the hardest working member of the whole coin family was the Indian cent. There were kinetoscope machines, photographs, automatic music boxes, candy and chewing gum sellers, weighing machines, lifting machines, and a hundred other penny-gobbling gadgets at every hand and coaxing the pennies from their owners' pockets in those days. Today, sadly, people often walk past a penny lying on the sidewalk without looking twice (PCGS # 2201)
