<B>1898 50C PR64 Cameo PCGS.</B></I> The 1898 half dollar comes with a proof mintage of 735 pieces. Walter Breen writes of this issue that: "It is now very seldom that one is offered that has <I>not</B></I> been cleaned." PCGS and NGC data indicate that nearly 400 specimens have been certified by the two services; approximately 100 have been assigned the Cameo designation. The near-Gem Cameo offered in this lot is essentially untoned, and the frosty, crisply defined motifs establish excellent contrast with the deeply mirrored fields. Faint hairlines in the fields, visible only under high magnification, preclude full Gem status. Outstanding overall eye appeal.
