<B>1898 $5 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC.</B></I> This PR66 Ultra Cameo half eagle is a charming and delectable counterpart to several other 1898 proof gold coins from a single consignor in the present sale, also including the quarter eagle, eagle, and double eagle, graded from PR66 Ultra Cameo to PR68 Ultra Cameo by NGC. The proof mintage of this issue, numbering 75 pieces, is a considerable decrease from other years of this era. For example, the 1896 proof emission numbers 103 coins, and 1899 saw 99 proof specimens produced. However, high grade pieces appear at auction with some regularity. The Garrett-Guth <I>Gold Encyclopedia</B></I> notes that the survival rate is quite high compared to most proof gold coins, but that perhaps 30 to 40 coins exist, still a tiny number when compared to the masses of collectors who desire proof gold.<BR> A search through Heritage's own auction records, stretching back more than a dozen years, shows the present PR66 Ultra Cameo example to be the second finest of this issue that we have ever had the privilege to offer, second only to a PR68 Ultra Cameo piece from our August 2006 Signature Auction. The present specimen is one of seven pieces graded PR66 Ultra or Deep Cameo at NGC and PCGS combined, with five coins finer (11/06). The black-on-gold contrast so desired in proof gold of the late 19th century is quite prominent on this lovely coin. There are no notable blemishes on this high grade example, and the fields have the distinctive orange-peel texture seen on proof gold in the latter part of the 19th century.
