1898 25C Barber Quarter--Obverse Die Cap and Brockage-
1898 25C Barber Quarter--Obverse Die Cap and Brockage--MS62 PCGS. A capped die is created when after striking, the struck coin sticks to the upper die and covers the face of that upper die. The reverse of this initial coin then becomes a new "die" that is repeatedly struck against more blank planchets that are fed into the press, causing an increased depth from the upper die, and an expanded image from the lower die.
A brockage is created when a struck coins remains on the lower die when a new planchet is fed on top of it, and both pieces are struck together. The brockage has a normal image of the obverse, and a reverse, incused image of the obverse in place of the normal reverse design.
This piece is a remarkable combination of both errors in one piece. A brockage was created first, then the brockage stuck to the upper die, becoming a capped die piece. As further planchets were introduced, one after another, the capped die became deeper, and the brockage image of the reverse expanded.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
