1898[$20] PR65 Cameo PCGS.
1898<$20> PR65 Cameo PCGS. A deeply reflective yellow-gold specimen with an appreciable degree of contrast for this normally well-produced Double Eagle proof. Close inspection of the fragile mirror surfaces makes one even more appreciative of the quality of this beautifully preserved representative. The obverse is essentially as struck while on the reverse light magnification reveals only a pair of short, wispy hairlines under the tip of the eagle's right (facing) wing. These, of course, have no ill-effect on the coin's dramatic eye appeal and perhaps shave a point off the specimen's overall grade. Production of our nation's largest regular issue gold coin in proof format was limited to a modest 75 pieces in 1898, and it can be reliably estimated that as many as 50 specimens are extant. Of course, only a small minority of those qualify at the PR65 or better grade level. This beautiful specimen represents an important opportunity for the gold specialist to acquire a rock-solid Gem example of the sought-after Liberty Double Eagle proof. Population: 2 in 65 Cameo, 1 finer (7/04).

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
