<B>1898 $2 1/2 PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS.</B></I> This phenomenal and glittering Superb Gem proof has deeply mirrored fields around highly lustrous and frosty devices. The design elements are intricately detailed and the surfaces display brilliant and rich yellow-gold color. Like all proof gold coins from this era, the fields have a wavy or watery appearance. Such a look does not immediately verify the proof status of a gold piece, but the lack of this characteristic generally discounts the proof status of otherwise proof coins. Of course, one glance at this beauty and its true status as one of the 165 proofs coined is immediately evident.<BR> While it is currently estimated that about half of the original mintage still survives, or about 80 coins, few can qualify as a Gem or finer. The present example is one of about a dozen such pieces, and probably ranks among the top four or five known examples. Current population reports show that one coin has been graded PR69 Ultra Cameo, and the Pittman coin (also offered in the present sale) is certified as PR68 Ultra Cameo. NGC has certified a few other submissions as PR68 Ultra Cameo or PR68 Cameo, although we suspect that some of those submission numbers represent attempts at an upgrade, finally culminating in the PR69 grade for the finest piece. Auction records reveal that only two or three top grade coins exist.<BR> This example is the highest quality piece graded by PCGS, one of four submissions to receive the PR67 Deep Cameo grade from that service. Again, we suspect that the current PCGS population (11/06) represents just one or two coins.
