1898 1C Proof Set NGC. A six-piece cent from cent
1898 1C Proof Set NGC. A six-piece cent from cent through dollar. It is usually only when old-time collections are sold that high quality early proof sets come on the market. While not part of such an old holding, this is a remarkable high grade set, with only one coin less than Superb Proof quality. An opportunity to bid on such a remarkable set seldom occurs.
Indian Cent. PR67 Red and Brown. Sharply struck with excellent eye appeal. The obverse has nearly full deep orange mint color and subtle traces of sea-green toning. A couple tiny spots are visible with the aid of a magnifier. The reverse is mostly toned with delightful light orange, intermingled with lilac and lime green color.
Liberty Nickel. PR66. This Premium Gem Proof is the only coin in the set with a grade below PR67. It is sharply struck with pale gray color accented by wisps of champagne toning. The fields are moderately mirrored with only slight cameo contrast. A tiny cut behind the bottom of the neck is the only noticeable mark, and probably the reason this did not garner the PR67 grade.
Barber Dime. PR67. The obverse is mostly brilliant with a crescent of lilac toning near the lower right border. The reverse is more deeply toned with lilac and steel color. Considerable contrast is noted between the devices and fields, and this is especially visible on the obverse.
Barber Quarter. PR67. This is an excellent example with deeply mirrored fields, lustrous devices, and rainbow toning on both sides. It is a splendid Cameo example, although not designated as such. The devices are all very sharply defined. All in all, a Superb Gem Proof that will truly please the connoisseur.
Barber Half Dollar. PR68. If a 65 is called Gem, a 66 is called Premium Gem, and a 67 is called Superb Gem, what description should be used for a coin that grades 68? This amazing beauty is nearly perfect, with full design definition on both sides, and wonderful cameo contrast. The centers on each side are brilliant, and they are surrounded by heather and sea-green color.
Morgan Silver Dollar. PR68. This is a lovely Cameo Proof of Superb Gem quality with brilliant central obverse and reverse, surrounded by blue, lilac, and iridescent toning. The devices and fields exhibit excellent contrast. Like the other silver coins in this set, this wonderful Morgan Silver Dollar deserves the Cameo designation.
