1898 $10 PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS. Like the other pieces i
1898 $10 PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS. Like the other pieces in this impressive 1898 gold proof set, this Superb Gem has rich orange-gold color with deeply mirrored fields, frosty and highly lustrous devices, and exceptional Deep Cameo contrast. A few faint splashes of coppery toning are barely visible on each side, and these should not be confused with "copper spots" as they are entirely different. Not only is this piece the finest certified 1898 proof eagle graded by PCGS, it is the only PR67 example that PCGS has seen, regardless of designation (11/06).
With a mintage of only 67 coins, this date is a rarity in proof format, despite the comments of Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth who claimed: "The 1898 eagle is one of the more common proofs of this era." These authors suggested that between 30 and 40 proofs are known, representing approximately half the original mintage. Our own research in the field of proof gold coins indicates that the actual population may prove to be in the range of 20 to 30 pieces. Over the past three decades, a large number of old collections have come on the market, as well as a few newer collections. These include names such as Garrett, Norweb, Eliasberg, Pittman, Carter, Bass, Trompeter, Bareford, Starr, and others. All of these collections were responsible for many proof gold coins across various denominations. As a result, a small number of pieces have been actively making the auction rounds in the last several years, giving the appearance of a much higher population than actually exists.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
