1898 $10 PR67 Deep Cameo NGC.
1898<$10> PR67 Deep Cameo NGC. Approximately 30 examples survive from an original proof mintage of just 67 eagles in 1898, and few of the survivors can hold a candle to this example for its remarkable technical quality and overall aesthetic appeal. This example is far finer than the Bass, Trompeter, or Pittman Collection coins. In fact, if it were possible, we suggest that this coin may be too perfect. There are no visible defects, whether mint-made or post-striking. Those who are involved in pedigree research always seek some individual characteristic, often a lint mark and occasionally a different type of blemish, to compare with other specimens for plate matching. This coin has no such imperfections, save for a tiny squiggle in the left obverse field that will probably not be visible in a photograph.
Like the other 1898 proof gold coins in this sale, the present specimen is fully defined, right down to the fine die polishing lines on the coronet below and behind IBE of LIBERTY. The fields are deeply mirrored with a wavy appearance, and they contrast nicely with the frosted devices. In fact, every individual element of the design has heavy mint frost, except for a tiny bright spot on Liberty's chin, which is apparently as struck. In fact, David Akers described this identical characteristic when describing the Pittman Collection specimen. Census: 3 in 67, 1 finer (6/06).
From The Belle Glade Collection.

Important notice:<
