1897-S 10C MS64 NGC. The San Francisco Mint delivered just 1.3 million Barber Dimes in 1897, virtually all of which entered circulation and remained there for many years. Like virtually all early branch mint issues in this series, the '97-S is difficult to locate in circulated grades above the Good level and undeniably rare in Mint State. David Lawrence (1991) opines that the high grade rarity of this date is underrated by most collectors. This particular near-Gem is sharply struck in all areas. The surfaces display mottled champagne-russet shadings that yield to silver-gray near-brilliance in the centers and over select peripheral areas. A reeding mark in the lower right obverse field and not quite full mint luster seem to bar this coin from an even higher grade. This is an important bidding opportunity for the advanced collector of Barber coinage. Population: 9 in 64, 6 finer (11/02).
