<B>1897 S$1 PR65 Cameo PCGS.</B></I> The low mintage of 731 proofs reflected the general numismatic malaise of this year: The auction scene was slow, and the American Numismatic Society was comatose, according to Bowers. This coin at first glance appears worthy of a significantly finer grade, but under a loupe a few slide marks appear on Liberty's cheek, with faint, scattered hairlines in the fields. Regardless, the appeal remains, with brilliant mirrors in the fields and thick, icy frost on the devices, and there is not so much as a hint of toning on either side.
