Several Morgan dollar dates have mysterious disappearances. One such is the 1897-O, the vast majority of which cannot be located in mint condition. Could it be they were tossed into the boiling pots of the mint as part of the 350,000,000 silver dollars melted in 1918? Based on the NGC and PCGS census figures more than a couple of thousand have been graded in various mint state grades, but nearly all of these are in Mint State 63 or lower. The mint state coins that did make it into collectors' hands usually show extensive bagmarks, or, worse, dull, lifeless boring color. The present coin is an extraordinary exception. We have to wonder where it lay hidden all these years in its superlative condition. For the connoisseur, this 1897-O is one that shouldn't be passed up, no matter what it takes to obtain it.
(Only 50 sets of dies were used to make the 4 million Dollars struck at the New Orleans Mint this year. Some have suggested that the dies were wrongly "basined," which resulted in their lackluster appearance and poor strike. Also, for some reason excessive bagmarks are a problem on many low-end BU 1897-O Dollars.)
