1897-O 50C MS64 PCGS. There are really no key issues in the Barber Half Dollar series, as virtually all date and mintmark combinations possess the same characteristics: typically offered in low circulated grades with mid-grade examples scarce and Mint State survivors scarce-to-rare. With just 632,000 pieces produced and an unusually poor rate of survival, the 1897-O is one of the stronger contenders for the title of "Key to the Barber Half Series." This softly frosted near-Gem displays lovely tan-gray patination over silky smooth surfaces. In fact, neither side reveals a blemish that would seem to preclude a full Gem rating, although we do note a typical O-mint strike with some softness of detail noted on the reverse over the highpoints of the eagle. Nevertheless, the eye appeal is extraordinary for an issue that is typically offered in low grades with little to no reverse definition.
