This 1896-Dated Presidential Campaign Token measures about 1.75” in diameter. A satirical medal from the 1896 presidential election. Wear to high points, scattered minor abrasions to each side, silvery fields and surfaces. On the obverse is a satirical "portrait" of William Jennings Bryan as a duck wearing a donkey's head, “IN BRYAN WE TRUST” in upper right obverse field. “UNITED SNAKES OF AMERICA” around obverse periphery. On the reverse: “FREE SILVER” across upper periphery, “ONE DAM” in the center, “1896” at bottom center.
In 1896, William Jennings Bryan ran unsuccessfully for President of the United States. Bryan, a former Democratic congressman from Nebraska, gained his party's presidential nomination in July of that year after electrifying the Democratic National Convention with his Cross of Gold speech.
