1896 U.C.V. Richmond, Virginia Reunion Poster
1896 U.C.V. Richmond, Virginia Reunion Poster advertises a reunion of Confederate Veterans as well as the "Laying of Corner Stone of Monument to President Jefferson Davis" on June 30 - July 2, 1896. This attractive and colorful poster of 9.75" x 13" (sight size) pictures the four versions of the Confederate flag with a history of each. Jefferson Davis, of course, was the president of the Confederate States of America. This cornerstone laying was accompanied by a large and elaborate ceremony in 1896 and plans were for a massive temple in Monroe Park costing $250,000. Fundraising became a problem and the project was scaled back and, with a less-elaborate design, it was finally completed in 1907 on land donated by the city of Richmond at Monument and Davis. The original cornerstone from this 1896 ceremony was included in the final monument. The poster is in a period wooden frame and has a bit of dampstaining on the bottom right corner and a barely-noticeable short tear at the top.
