Light gold toning graces this lustrous and nicely preserved high grade better date dollar. The curl above the ear is moderately soft, but the strike is otherwise bold. The "sweet spot" of the cheek is refreshingly smooth. After several years of limited mintages, all three Mints produced large quantities of silver dollars in 1896. The Philadelphia issue is common, even in Mint State, as one would expect from its mintage of nearly 10 million pieces. The 1896-O is also common in circulated grades, but emerges as a surprising rarity in Mint State. The mintage of the 1896-S is similar to that of the 1896-O, but the 1896-S is much scarcer in circulated grades. Although the 1896-S is more collectible than the 1896-O in better Mint State grades, the 1896-S becomes rare in its own right at the MS65 level. Census: 19 in 65, 5 finer (9/06).
