1896-S 25C MS65 PCGS. Obverse Die 1, Reverse Die 1. Ev 1896-S[25C] MS65 PCGS.
1896-S<25C> MS65 PCGS. Obverse Die 1, Reverse Die 1. Even though the 1913-S has a far lower mintage than the 1896-S, with only 40,000 coins produced vs. 188,039 for the 1896-S, the 1913-S is a more available coin. This, of course, is because of the increased awareness over a period of 17 years of the scarcity of low mintage coins by collectors and dealers as well as the general public. This increased awareness resulted in more 1913-S quarters being set aside relative to its mintage than the 1896-S. The 1896-S is far scarcer in mint condition than the '13-S.
This piece is struck from Lawrence's Obverse Die 1, that shows the 1 in the date centered over a denticle. Reverse Die 1 shows the mintmark centered between the R and D of QUARTER DOLLAR, and it is higher than the other known reverse. This is an exceptionally attractive coin that exhibits bright, flashy mint luster with semi-reflective fields. Close examination of the fields shows fine die striations which, of course, are responsible for the partial reflectivity. Brilliant throughout, the striking details are fully articulated with complete definition on Liberty's forecurl and both of the eagle's talons. A few minor luster grazes are present, but these do not affect the eye appeal of this coin, which is considerable. Population: 9 in 65, 1 finer (4/06).
