1896-S[25C] MS64 PCGS.
1896-S<25C> MS64 PCGS. The 1896-S is one of the "Big Three" among Barber Quarters, the others being the 1901-S and 1913-S. The '96-S was produced to the extent of just 188,039 pieces, survivors of which are particularly rare and desirable in grades at or above the XF level. This is an exceptionally bright coin with swirling cartwheel luster effects. Both sides present as untoned, at least outwardly, but one can discern faint champagne-tan highlights at a few angles on the reverse. Fully brought up in all areas, and probably worthy of consideration at the MS65 level were it not for a few obverse abrasions before Liberty's earlobe.
Specialists recognize two obverse and two reverse dies for the 1896-S Quarter. This particular representative was struck from the dies that David Lawrence (1994) attributes as obverse # 1 and reverse # 1. The former is clashed (as produced), evidence of which is seen in Liberty's ear. Population: 12 in 64, 11 finer (3/04).
Ex: Central States Signature Sale (Heritage, 5/03), lot 6165, which realized $9,775.
From the JFS Collection.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
