1896-S $20 MS64 NGC.
1896-S $20 MS64 NGC.<p>The 1896-S is common in any grade up through MS63. It is scarce in MS64 and extremely rare in MS65. Through the end of 2001, NGC had only graded one in MS65 while PCGS had recorded none. Bright, frosted mint luster and lovely, subtle patina characterizes this near-Gem Double Eagle. With minimal abrasions, the only detracting feature we can find is a certain lack of highpoint detail on the obverse. The ultimate 1896-S is the PCGS MS67 that was once part of the Eliasberg Collection, originally obtained by John Clapp, Sr. directly from the mint at the time of issue for face value. It brought $13,200 in 1982 and, needless to say, would sell for many multiples of that today. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
