1896-O$1> MS64 ANACS. While almost 5 million pieces were struck of the 1896-O, there are remarkably few that are known today in mint condition. All Uncirculated coins are scarce and higher grade pieces are all but unobtainable. The numbers certified bear this out with only 34 pieces certified by PCGS and NGC combined, and six finer (9/06). This further reinforces Wayne Miller's statement in his 1982 Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook: "the 1896-O is the rarest of all Morgan dollars in truly gem condition." Apparently most of the mintage was dropped into circulation shortly after striking, and as a result the '96-O is a common coin in circulated grades. This particular piece shows even, satiny mint luster and surfaces that are generally free from toning. There are no obvious abrasions on either side and the centers show just a bit of striking softness, a trait usually seen on this issue.
