1896-O Morgan $1 PCGS MS64
"No other Morgan dollar is as consistently deficient in luster, strike, and degree of surface abrasions as the 1896-O. A fully struck piece is rare; an 1896-O with minimum bagmarks is even more unusual. In the author's opinion, the 1896-O is the rarest of all Morgan dollars in truly gem condition." That is the experience of Wayne Miller when writing his Morgan and Peace Dollar book, and those words are just as true today. Yet, this 1896-O is somehow better than the average specimen seen in auctions. The exceptionally choice example offered here not only betters the usual striking woes, but its smooth, satiny surfaces border on gem quality. The coin is bright and glowing. In fact, Liberty's face is much nicer than some we've seen parading around as "MS65".

Most Mint State 1896-O Morgan dollars known today have as their source the Treasury sales of 1962 to 1964, as well as some others paid out in the 1950s. Nearly all of the coins once held in the Treasury for so many years are now Mint State 60 to Mint State 63 quality at best. Circulated examples from the original 4.9 million mintage are all that are commonly found.
