1896 Election: Unique Badge Presented by the RNC
1896 Election: A Unique Badge Presented by the Republican National Committee to Wisconsin Member Henry Clay Payne. One side reads "National Republican Headquarters, 1896". The reverse reads "Presented to Henry C. Payne by the National Committee", his name having been engraved in script. The hanger features an eagle atop a horizontal fasces wrapped in a ribbon reading "protection" and "sound money". A substantial and elegant badge in choice condition. Payne was a Milwaukee Wisconsin civic leader and a member of the Republican National committee from 1880-1904. In 1904, he served as chairman, presiding over Theodore Roosevelt's landslide victory. We have never seen this item before. Even the hanger part is a style which seems to have been made for just this particular badge as we have encountered no other example. Pin missing on reverse. Across the lower portion of the hanger on reverse is a bar which suggests that there was originally a ribbon attached, which would have served as a background for the suspended medal. 55mm x 56mm.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
