Behind the shield are two crossed poles bearing a liberty cap and eagle. A scroll passing in front of the shield is inscribed LIBERTY. There are 13 stars at the border, arranged 7 left and 6 right. The border is beaded on both sides. The denomination 5 CENTS is centered within a curved olive sprig on the reverse. Struck in some combination of standard coin nickel and perhaps with a smidgen of zinc or some form of German silver (metallurgical studies have not been conducted on this design type), with a plain edge.
